A significant fire at the Austin Country Flea Mart on East U.S. Highway 290 has been contained to the building where it originated. Firefighters successfully managed to prevent the flames from spreading, despite the fire igniting nearby brush and a tire pile.
Two individuals, who were not part of the firefighting team, received treatment for minor injuries. The blaze resulted in the collapse of several structures within the flea market, prompting a swift response from multiple units of the Austin Fire Department as well as surrounding agencies.
The emergency call was received around 6 p.m., and upon arrival, crews were met with heavy black smoke. An immediate second alarm was issued to summon additional firefighters and water resources. Initially, the flames were restricted to a few buildings, but winds carried embers into the surrounding area, leading to the brush fire that has now been contained. Six brush trucks were deployed to assist in controlling the situation.
The fire also engulfed a tire pile, creating a dense plume of black smoke that was visible from miles away, particularly along Interstate 35 and U.S. 290. By 8 p.m., firefighters had successfully confined the blaze to its point of origin, although the destruction resulted in the collapse of several flea mart structures.
Emergency medical personnel from Austin-Travis County treated two individuals for minor injuries in connection with the incident. At this time, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Motorists are advised to steer clear of the area, as heavy traffic delays are being reported on eastbound U.S. 290 due to the ongoing emergency response.
