AUSTIN, Texas – P. Terry’s has announced the closure of its flagship store at Capital Plaza, which will take place on June 28. This decision comes in response to the upcoming expansion of I-35, a significant infrastructure project affecting the area.
Patrick Terry, the founder and CEO of P. Terry’s, shared the news in an emotional video posted on social media. He expressed gratitude to the loyal customers who have frequented the establishment over the past decade. “It’s a really sad day for the P. Terry’s family,” Terry stated. “We have been so proud to be here. We think this building is iconic. We love our location. We’ve been able to serve the people in Central Texas at this location for so long, but we must go and there’s not anything we can do about it.”
The flagship store, situated at the intersection of US 290 and I-35 within the Capital Plaza shopping center, has been a staple in the community since its opening. The closure is a direct result of the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) I-35 expansion project, which is part of the larger Capital Express Central initiative that extends from Lady Bird Lake to US 290.
This particular segment of the project affects the University section, running from US 290 to MLK Boulevard, and is scheduled to begin construction in 2027, with an expected completion date in 2033, contingent upon weather conditions. The expansion will introduce two high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in both directions along I-35, alongside various structural improvements, including the reconstruction of several intersections and the addition of a pedestrian-only bridge at Capital Plaza.
Plans reveal that the current P. Terry’s location will be impacted by the new frontage road and cross streets being constructed south of Reinli Street, as indicated in a schematic released by TxDOT.
In light of the impending closure, P. Terry’s encourages patrons to visit their nearby locations at Koenig and Tech Ridge. The announcement has been met with sadness from the community, as many have enjoyed the unique offerings of the beloved fast-food chain.
