Protests Erupt Outside Austin Home Over Huston Tillotson Parking Dispute Video

Protests erupted over the weekend outside a residence in East Austin, ignited by a viral video capturing a contentious parking dispute near Huston-Tillotson University. The video, shared on social media, shows a couple confronting students regarding their use of public parking spaces in the neighborhood.

The incident unfolded on East 9th Street, where the couple reportedly objected to students parking in front of their home. In the video, which was posted by a Huston-Tillotson student named Bri, the couple can be seen making remarks about the university while insisting that students should not park in the area.

In her Instagram video, Bri approaches the couple and questions their actions, stating, “Excuse me, do y’all live here? Y’all know that it’s legal to park right here, right?” The couple’s responses included a remark about the cost of their home and a comment on the university’s graduation rates, which Bri challenged by reminding them of the neighborhood’s historical significance.

Community members and students gathered outside the couple’s home in protest, bringing music, chants, and signs that conveyed their discontent. One sign read, “You bought a house, not our history, East Austin is ours.” Despite the tensions, the protests remained peaceful, with law enforcement monitoring the situation but not intervening.

Local residents expressed their concerns regarding the couple’s remarks. Sybill Bradley, a neighbor for 16 years, noted that parking issues have not been a problem historically and criticized the couple’s claim to the neighborhood. Another anonymous neighbor shared feelings of disappointment, emphasizing the importance of community and respect.

In response to the situation, the City of Austin clarified its parking regulations for East 9th Street, stating that public parking is permitted unless otherwise specified, such as in front of driveways or at intersections.
