The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is currently conducting a thorough review of all cases associated with former Houston police officer Ashley Gonzalez. This comes in light of her recent termination from the Houston Police Department, following an investigation into a racist outburst she shared on social media.
In a statement, the district attorney’s office expressed their dismay, stating, “Racism is abhorrent; the fact we have to lead the statement with this is disgraceful.” They further confirmed that the Conviction Integrity Chief is actively engaged in a comprehensive examination of Gonzalez’s cases. They emphasized their commitment to ethically notifying defense attorneys about the implications of her disciplinary actions on ongoing cases.
The background of this situation reveals that Gonzalez was dismissed after video evidence emerged showing her using a racial slur to refer to Black individuals. She was placed on administrative leave the previous Monday, and the department officially announced her termination on Friday.
Chief J. Noe Diaz, Jr. condemned Gonzalez’s actions, describing them as “abhorrent, disgusting, and entirely unacceptable.” He reiterated that such behavior is deeply troubling and has no place within law enforcement or the community at large. The police department stated that the investigation was carried out as swiftly as legally permissible, adhering to state civil service laws.
