Efforts are underway to tackle the escalating traffic congestion along Highway 29, which stretches between Georgetown and Liberty Hill in Williamson County. The initiatives include both immediate relief measures and a larger infrastructure project aimed at long-term solutions.
The congestion situation has become increasingly apparent, as evidenced by traffic data collected at the busy intersection of the US 183 tollway and SH 29. Commuters, like Carlee Griffin, have noted a significant rise in traffic over recent years. “In three years, it’s changed quite a bit. They’re constantly changing everything and people are flooding everywhere. It’s hard to get anywhere you need to go,” Griffin remarked.
Bypass Connectors Under Construction
In response to this growing issue, a series of bypass connectors are being constructed throughout the county. The Seward Junction Loop in Liberty Hill mirrors similar projects completed in Georgetown. Precinct 2 Commissioner Cynthia Long emphasized the importance of completing all segments to achieve noticeable traffic relief. “It’s managed; I think you have to complete all of the pieces before you see a lot of relief,” she stated.
The goal of these connectors is to alleviate congestion at major intersections while redirecting traffic away from downtown areas in Georgetown and Liberty Hill. Long expressed optimism regarding the progress of the Seward Junction Loop, noting that the completion of portions of the loop has already made a positive impact. “I’m excited we were able to open half of Seward Junction Loop a year or two ago. That’s really helped,” she added.
However, the addition of new travel options has also led to a rise in traffic signals, contributing to longer commutes. A significant overhaul of SH 29 is necessary to effectively address the gridlock. In preparation for this, the county has been acquiring rights of way for several years, recognizing that the cost of land will only increase over time. “Buying it now is always cheaper than 10 years from now,” Long explained.
TxDOT’s Plans for Expansion
The expansion of SH 29 itself will be managed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Initial discussions regarding this project have commenced, with plans to create a limited-access freeway connecting US 281 in Burnet to I-35 in Georgetown. However, officials caution that the project is still in its early phases.
While the timeline for construction remains uncertain, community outreach is anticipated to occur next year. Environmental impact studies will be the first step in the expansion process, with funding sources and overall costs yet to be determined. “Well, relief is coming. We’ve got pieces in place, but we’re also working on the much bigger picture,” Long remarked.
Williamson County is focusing on enhancing major north-south routes, while currently, the SH 45 tollway serves as the only rapid east-west corridor. Expanding Highway 29 would significantly improve cross-county connectivity.
Long concluded by highlighting the county’s long-term vision for transportation, stating, “We have a long-range transportation plan that really shows what the county road system needs to look like when we are at 3 million people. We’re not just thinking five and ten years ahead; we’re looking 50 years ahead.”
