Tragedy struck in Odessa, Texas, as a firefighter lost his life and several others sustained injuries while combating a rapidly spreading residential fire on Sunday evening. Lieutenant Isai Huerta, a dedicated member of the Odessa Fire Rescue with nine years of service, passed away from injuries sustained during the incident.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire, which occurred in a trailer located in the 1900 block of South Westcliff Road at approximately 4:59 p.m. The Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office is overseeing the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the blaze that claimed Huerta’s life at the age of 29.
Emergency responders from Odessa Fire Rescue, along with personnel from the West Odessa Volunteer Fire Department, rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames. However, conditions worsened quickly, resulting in multiple injuries among the firefighters. Huerta, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Medical Center Hospital.
Reports regarding the number of injured firefighters varied, with state officials indicating that up to seven firefighters were hospitalized, six of whom were later treated and released. Local media also noted that at least two additional firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries and continued to receive medical attention.
State Fire Marshal Debra Knight expressed her condolences, stating, “Lt. Huerta served with dedication and courage,” acknowledging the profound loss felt by both the department and Huerta’s family. Odessa Fire Rescue Chief Jason Cotton commemorated Huerta as a cornerstone of the organization, highlighting his positivity and commitment to the job. “Isai was a huge part of our organization, a true firefighter,” Cotton said. “He was always happy, always willing to help, and he truly enjoyed the job.”
Odessa Mayor Cal Hendrick reflected on the loss, remarking that the city had “lost a hero” whose contributions would be remembered. In response to the incident, both the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Ector County Sheriff’s Office are conducting thorough investigations, including an inquiry into the origin and cause of the fire, along with a formal firefighter fatality investigation. The Texas State Association of Firefighters is also participating in the investigation, with assistance expected from representatives of the International Association of Firefighters.
In honor of Lt. Huerta, a public memorial area has been set up in front of the Central Fire Station located at 1100 W. 2nd Street in Odessa, providing an opportunity for community members to pay their respects. Odessa, situated in the Permian Basin region of West Texas, lies approximately 250 miles northwest of Austin.
