The upcoming Trinity Pride Fest in Fort Worth is bracing for an influx of visitors linked to the FIFA World Cup, particularly fans from Argentina, a country that has recently taken a hard stance against LGBTQ+ rights. With the Argentine national team set to stay in Fort Worth, the festival organizers are preparing for potential safety challenges associated with this demographic.
Argentina, once celebrated for its progressive stance towards the LGBTQ+ community, has seen a drastic shift since the election of President Javier Milei in 2023. Under his administration, incidents of hate crimes against LGBTQ+ individuals have surged by 70%, alongside significant rollbacks of previously established rights. Milei’s policies, which include restrictions on gender-affirming healthcare for minors and the dismantling of antidiscrimination agencies, signal a hostile environment for the queer community.
This summer, both Argentine fans and local LGBTQ+ individuals will converge in Fort Worth during the FIFA World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19. Matches will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with Team Argentina and Team Japan residing in Fort Worth. Coinciding with this event, the Trinity Pride Fest is scheduled for June 27 in the lively South Main Village, where last year’s festival attracted nearly 7,000 attendees.
Roger Calderon, president of Trinity Pride Fest, expressed confidence in the Fort Worth police’s ability to ensure the safety of festivalgoers amidst the anticipated increase in activity due to the World Cup. “The Trinity Pride board is definitely aware of the World Cup schedule and mindful of the possibility of increased activity in the area,” he remarked. Calderon highlighted the strong collaboration between the festival organizers and local law enforcement, which is crucial for maintaining a secure and inclusive atmosphere for everyone.
The Fort Worth Police Department has assured that they will provide active patrolling and maintain an on-site presence during the festival to help ensure safety. However, citing security protocols, they have refrained from disclosing specific details regarding their operational strategies for the event.
