The City of Austin is gearing up for its annual “Star-Spangled Fest” in celebration of the Fourth of July, coinciding with America’s 250th birthday. This festive event promises a day filled with music, food, drinks, and activities suitable for all ages at Auditorium Shores.
The celebration is set to kick off on Saturday, July 4, with morning festivities from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by an afternoon program starting at 4:30 p.m. and continuing until 10 p.m. Admission is free, and the city anticipates drawing around 70,000 attendees, a testament to the event’s popularity over its 49-year history.
Teri Smart, the producer of the Star-Spangled Fest, emphasized the significance of this gathering for the community. “It’s important to bring all different Austinites together,” she noted. The event will culminate in a spectacular finale featuring a drone show and a fireworks display, which will include 2,500 bursts lighting up the night sky. “The symphony will be playing, and there will be a drone show celebrating the last 250 years of travel evolution,” Smart added, highlighting the unique twist on the traditional celebrations.
Travel and Safety Precautions
<pFor those planning to travel during the holiday weekend, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will increase its patrols on highways. This initiative aims to address the anticipated rise in traffic due to both the Fourth of July celebrations and World Cup events occurring in Dallas and Houston. Sgt. Billy Ray from DPS stated, “We know there’s going to be increased traffic, so we’re going to increase our presence on the highways and make sure everybody’s safe.”
Last year, DPS enforced strict measures, issuing over 64,241 citations and warnings, which included a significant number for speeding and driving without insurance. They also arrested 277 individuals on DWI charges. Travelers are urged to ensure their vehicles are in good condition, plan their routes carefully, and avoid distractions while driving. Anyone witnessing erratic driving should report it to law enforcement.
Boating Safety Measures
For those who plan to enjoy the holiday on the water, safety remains a top priority. Early celebrators were spotted at the Loop 360 boat ramp, gearing up for the festivities. The Austin Police Department’s Lake Patrol Unit will be enforcing regulations that prohibit personal watercraft, including wet bikes and motorized surfboards, on Lake Austin.
Boaters are reminded to practice defensive driving and stay vigilant of their surroundings. Darwin German advised, “Be defensive. You know, watch out for all the other people because there are some crazy people out there.” Manuela Atilano echoed the sentiment, urging fellow boaters to refrain from drinking and driving and to prioritize safety for themselves and others.
