Ceremonial first pitches often feature musical entertainers, and venues like Globe Life Field in Arlington frequently showcase mariachi bands, further blending the two beloved pastimes.
This harmonious fusion was on full display Thursday night, thanks to Eric Nadel, the esteemed announcer for the Texas Rangers, who cherishes both music and baseball. For the past several years, Nadel has celebrated his birthday with a charity concert, and this occasion marked the 14th such event, coinciding with his 75th birthday. Initially hosted at the Kessler Theater, the gathering has since outgrown that space and now takes place at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas.
During his opening remarks, Nadel expressed his enthusiasm for introducing his friends to bands they might not have encountered before. While I had a passing familiarity with Chuck Prophet, I was unaware of his live performances under the name Chuck Prophet and his Cumbia Shoes. The headliner, Sammy Rae & The Friends, made a noteworthy impression. Many may know Nadel for his insights into Rangers’ prospects or pitching stats, but few realize his ability to curate extraordinary musical talent.
The language of baseball and music often overlaps, as both fields share a rich vocabulary. A fastball aimed at a batter’s chin is referred to as “chin music,” while knuckleballs are described as dancing through the air. Both musicians and athletes aim for hits in their respective crafts. From banjo players to bandboxes, and even the concept of a “1-2-3 double play” (sometimes humorously dubbed a “Lawrence Welk”), the connections between the two worlds are abundant. This relationship is further emphasized by former Major League players like George “Piano Legs” Gore and “Fiddler Bill” McGee.

One of my favorite commercials during my tenure with the Rangers featured a music video where we provided instruments to players from Central and South America, celebrating their cultural heritage with a “Latin Rhythm” theme. The players didn’t need to play the instruments proficiently – the magic of television made it all possible.
In baseball, disrupting an opponent’s rhythm can be a strategic advantage, a concept that resonates with the mission of the Eric Nadel Birthday Benefit.
