January 13 marks a somber milestone as it commemorates 30 years since the abduction of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman in Arlington, Texas. This tragic event, which led to her kidnapping and subsequent murder while she was riding her bicycle, also coincides with National Amber Alert Day. Former Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson, a key figure in the establishment of the AMBER Alert system, reflected on the impact of the case in a recent interview.
Amber Hagerman was taken on January 13, 1996, while riding her bike in the parking lot of an abandoned grocery store. Eyewitness accounts describe a harrowing scene where she reportedly screamed and fought against her abductor, a man driving a black pickup truck. Tragically, her body was discovered four days later in a creek approximately four miles from the abduction site.
Despite the passage of three decades, Amber’s murder remains one of the most notorious unsolved cases in North Texas. The Arlington Police Department continues to keep the investigation active, utilizing advanced DNA technology in hopes of generating a comprehensive profile of the perpetrator. Authorities believe the suspect, who was likely in his 20s or 30s at the time of the crime, would now be in his 50s or 60s.
Amber’s mother, Donna Williams, expressed her longing for answers: “I want to know why… why her? She was only a little girl. To Amber’s killer: I’m asking you today to turn yourself in. Give Amber justice.” Assistant Police Chief Kevin Kolbye emphasized the importance of public assistance, stating, “Our detectives believe that someone still has knowledge of this horrific crime, and we need them to come forward.”
In the pursuit of justice, Arlington police have released a new description of the suspect and the vehicle involved in the abduction. The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic male, now in his 50s or 60s, standing under 6 feet tall with a medium build and brown or black hair. The vehicle is believed to be a black 1980s or 1990s full-size fleet pickup truck, characterized by a short wheelbase, a single cab, and a clear rear window without a slider. At the time of the incident, the truck was reported to be in good condition with no visible damage.
To encourage information leading to an arrest and conviction, Oak Farms Dairy has offered a $10,000 reward. The Arlington Police Department has also set up a dedicated tip line, urging anyone with relevant information, no matter how minor it may seem, to reach out at 817-575-8823.
