In a dramatic turn of events, a 53-year-old man was apprehended following a lengthy 75-minute pursuit through northeast Harris County. The chase began after deputies were alerted to a hit-and-run incident that resulted in injuries.
According to Chief Deputy Tommy Diaz of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the situation unfolded around 9:47 p.m. on a Sunday when an off-duty constable from Precinct 4 reported the crash. The suspect, driving a military-style tractor trailer, was soon located by law enforcement.
Despite deputies activating their emergency lights and attempting to deploy spike strips to halt the vehicle, the suspect refused to stop, leading to a protracted chase. The sheriff’s office made several attempts to flatten the tires of the vehicle, but the suspect continued to evade capture.
At one point during the chase, the vehicle came to a stop near Beltway 8 at Garrett Road, prompting deputies to approach. However, the suspect managed to flee again after one deputy discharged their firearm, continuing the pursuit.
The chase progressed into the east side of Houston, where the suspect entered I-10, exited at Waco, and circled back onto the main lanes of the Eastex Freeway. Chief Diaz noted that Texas Department of Public Safety troopers joined the effort and fired at the suspect in an attempt to end the chase, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Ultimately, the suspect’s vehicle suffered damage, leading to flat tires, and came to a halt near U.S. 59 and Little York. The Harris County SWAT team was deployed to the scene, attempting to communicate with the suspect through verbal commands. When those proved ineffective, authorities resorted to using tear gas to coax the suspect out of the vehicle.
Following these efforts, the suspect was taken into custody and is now facing multiple charges. It has been reported that the suspect was involved in collisions with at least ten vehicles during the incident.
Emergency medical services were summoned for one civilian who sustained injuries due to the hit-and-run. However, details regarding the condition of the injured party and the identity of the suspect remain undisclosed at this time.
