In early October, Fort Worth’s professional bull-riding team, the Ariat Texas Rattlers, is set to lead a thrilling weekend of action. The event, known as Rattler Days, will showcase the team’s 2026 home games over the weekend of October 2-4, complementing the games with fan-festival activities.
Chad Blankenship, the president and general manager of the Rattlers, describes the event as “a distinctly hometown event.” He emphasizes the importance of home games in fostering a passionate fanbase that buys tickets, watches broadcasts, and supports the team through merchandise purchases.
The Rattlers recently unveiled city jerseys that will be worn during team introductions at Rattler Days, designed to honor their hometown of Fort Worth. This year’s version pays tribute to military heritage, while previous designs celebrated the region’s Western roots and its nickname, Panther City.
Each team in the league hosts a single homestand, consisting of three days packed with competitive action. “Every day there are five games, and all 10 teams compete each day,” Blankenship explained. This format has introduced collaborative elements to the typically individualistic sport of bull riding, aligning it more closely with traditional team sports.
Building a strong fanbase is essential for the Rattlers, especially considering Fort Worth’s distinction as the largest city in the U.S. without a professional sports franchise. Drew Hays, executive director of the Fort Worth Sports Commission, highlighted this challenge and noted the historical struggles of other professional teams in the city.
However, the Rattlers benefit from a rich Western heritage that is deeply embedded in Fort Worth’s identity. “To have a professional organization like the Texas Rattlers that cohesively fits our brand helps us tell that story,” Hays added.
With a loyal local following steeped in agricultural traditions, the Rattlers are positioned to attract fans not just from North Texas, but also from neighboring cities like Austin and Oklahoma City. The three-day event is designed to encourage visitors to spend the weekend in Fort Worth.
Historically, Fort Worth teams have struggled to generate revenue from out-of-town fans. Proximity to rival teams and the allure of rivalries are critical for drawing larger crowds and boosting local business. The Rattlers aim to capitalize on these dynamics by creating an engaging event that includes fan festivals with opportunities for interaction.
“We have mascots, a FFA charity pancake breakfast, a parade, and autograph signings,” Blankenship noted, emphasizing the importance of community engagement. Hays pointed out that personal interactions at events enhance the connection fans feel with the athletes.
The team is also active throughout the year, participating in local programs and initiatives. Many team members reside in the area, further strengthening ties to the community. The riders are among the best in the sport, which is crucial in a media landscape dominated by larger leagues.
The Rattlers compete at the modern Dickies Arena, an advantage that previous Fort Worth franchises did not enjoy. Additionally, they have opened a dedicated training facility in Decatur to enhance their performance, contributing to their success on the field. The Rattlers won the 2023 championship, further solidifying their appeal among fans.
With an impressive home game record, including a remarkable 11 wins out of 12 games in their first four seasons, the Rattlers are well-positioned to attract a dedicated following. “Fans like winners,” Blankenship remarked, underscoring the importance of success in building a loyal fanbase.
The excitement of each competition often culminates in thrilling moments, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Hays noted the high-energy atmosphere that accompanies each event, particularly as it can hinge on the performance of the final rider.
As Rattler Days approaches on October 2-4, the team aims to create an exhilarating experience that will engage fans and establish their presence in Fort Worth.
