Hwy 183 North Project Nears Completion: What You Need to Know

The expansion of Highway 183 North is nearing its completion, with significant developments aimed at enhancing connectivity from Liberty Hill to downtown Austin. The project introduces new express lanes designed to eliminate red lights, streamlining travel for commuters.

Officials anticipate that the northbound express lanes will open shortly after Christmas, allowing for a swift nine-minute journey during peak morning and afternoon hours. Mike Sexton, Director of Engineering for the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, indicated that the completion of these lanes is expected before the 10th of January.

The $612 million project commenced in January 2022 and now enters its final stages, employing around 500 workers daily to ensure timely progress. The installation of delineators—11,000 in total—has been underway, facilitating the separation of toll and free lanes between MoPac and Lakeline Mall.

Although the overall schedule has faced some delays, there is already a small section of the highway open, providing additional lane capacity for commuters. To expedite the process, the contractor has incentivized crews to work through the holiday season, ensuring that the public can experience the new roadway upon returning from their breaks.

The southbound lanes of the new expressway are slated to open in February, further enhancing the traffic flow. The upgrades to the non-tolled lanes are also expected to significantly reduce commute times, with estimates suggesting a 24-minute savings in the morning and 16 minutes in the afternoon.

However, some residents remain skeptical about the promised time savings. One commuter expressed doubts, suggesting that initial congestion might be alleviated, but ultimately, increased usage would likely return traffic conditions to their previous state.

With the new infrastructure, drivers leaving Liberty Hill will no longer encounter red lights until reaching downtown Austin. This improvement offers residents an opportunity to access affordable living in the Hill Country while maintaining efficient travel to urban areas. “It’s mind-boggling that you could even get out to Liberty Hill that quickly,” Sexton remarked.

Similar to the Hwy 183 North project, ongoing improvements in the metro area are setting the stage for future expansions on I-35. Lessons learned from this project will inform the construction strategies employed on I-35, which is expected to minimize disruption during its upgrade.

The fully expanded Highway 183 will serve as a critical alternative to I-35, complementing upgrades to MoPac, Loop 360, and SH 130. However, challenges remain, as the anticipated relief from gridlock may be temporary given the steady influx of new residents in the area.

Looking ahead, one of the final components to be unveiled will be the fly-over connectors with MoPac. While some landscaping work is expected to carry into 2026, the completion of the project is eagerly anticipated, marking a significant milestone for Austin’s transportation infrastructure.

As construction progresses, the excitement surrounding the project builds, with hopes that it will ultimately provide a more efficient and accessible roadway network for the region.
