AUSTIN, Texas – The recent military actions taken by the United States and Israel against Iran have sparked a significant divide among Texas residents and lawmakers, with opinions ranging from strong support to vehement opposition.
Governor Greg Abbott voiced his backing for the U.S. strikes, declaring Texas’s solidarity with President Trump in a statement released over the weekend. He emphasized that Iran’s aggression towards the U.S. and its allies would no longer be tolerated, calling the joint operations a demonstration of American strength and a necessary step towards ensuring global stability. Abbott also expressed his hope that the Iranian populace would eventually be liberated from their oppressive regime.
Other Republican leaders echoed this sentiment. Attorney General Ken Paxton praised Trump’s leadership, highlighting the threat Iran poses and underscoring the importance of preventing the nation from acquiring nuclear capabilities. Senator John Cornyn remarked on the long-standing destabilization caused by Iran in the Middle East and expressed hope for a brighter future for the Iranian people following the strikes. Congressman Wesley Hunt also shared a prayer for the safety of U.S. military personnel involved in the operations, emphasizing the weight of such decisions.
Democrats Oppose Military Action
Conversely, Democratic candidates in Texas were quick to criticize the military intervention. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett condemned the absence of Congressional approval for the strikes, labeling them illegal and indicative of Trump’s disregard for democratic processes. She called for the passage of a War Powers Resolution to curb what she termed dangerous overreach. Representative James Talarico succinctly stated his opposition to prolonged military engagements, asserting that “no more forever wars” should be the goal.

The public response in Austin reflects this political divide. Residents expressed a range of emotions regarding the U.S. military involvement. Rafael Tuval, an Israeli-American with family in Israel, reported ongoing communication with relatives sheltering amid missile attacks. He remains hopeful, stating that the strong spirit of the Israeli people will prevail, and sees U.S. intervention as a necessary measure in light of stalled negotiations with Iran.
However, not all residents share Tuval’s perspective. Some, like PJ Cornell of the Texas branch of the American Communist Party, criticized the U.S. military’s historical interventions in the Middle East, recalling the protracted conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and their devastating consequences. Other locals, including visitor Brandon Stricker, expressed concern about the potential for innocent casualties and voiced their opposition to any form of warfare.
Following the strikes, President Trump called on the Iranian people to rise against their government in a message aimed at inspiring change. Meanwhile, Governor Abbott announced the deployment of additional security measures across Texas, including at critical infrastructure sites, in anticipation of possible Iranian retaliation.
