A woman from Mansfield has received a life sentence after confessing to the tragic smothering of her nine-year-old niece, Melodi Sneed. A jury in Tarrant County convicted Mercia Sneed of capital murder and injury to a child causing serious bodily harm in connection with the child’s 2019 death.
Following the verdict, Sneed was sentenced to two life terms without the possibility of parole. During the closing arguments, Assistant District Attorney Charlie Boulware emphasized the importance of justice for Melodi’s family, which had waited seven long years for this moment.
The case dates back to July 27, 2019, when Mansfield police discovered Melodi unresponsive in her family’s home on Eagle Drive. She was later declared dead at a local hospital. According to court testimonies, the incident occurred late at night after the other adults in the home had gone to bed and Melodi had fallen asleep on the couch in the game room.
Reports indicate that Sneed ordered her 13-year-old son to leave the room before she pressed a pillow over Melodi’s face for several minutes. Despite the young girl’s attempts to scream and resist, she was ultimately overpowered. After Melodi ceased struggling, Sneed reportedly wiped her face and discarded the pillow.
During the investigation into Melodi’s death, Sneed’s son informed the police about the events he had witnessed, leading to Sneed’s confession. Notably, no motive for the murder was provided during the trial.
