Robinson, who had been operating a fraudulent security company, managed to ingratiate himself within law enforcement and political circles, even securing a position as a security guard for Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett.
The circumstances surrounding how Robinson’s criminal background went unnoticed during the vetting processes of the U.S. House and other local agencies remain unclear. He had a history of arrests related to theft and fraud, yet he successfully posed as a legitimate security provider.
Robinson, who was also known as Mike King, had built a facade that allowed him to mingle with police and political figures. He employed actual law enforcement officers under the guise of his security business and was ultimately contracted to protect Crockett.
His life came to a tragic end during a standoff with police, who were attempting to arrest him. The incident has raised significant questions about the vetting procedures that allowed someone with Robinson’s background to operate in such close proximity to lawmakers.
Attorney Calvin D. Johnson, who represented Robinson in a previous fraud case, expressed his disbelief upon recognizing his former client in media coverage. “He was very smooth and friendly,” Johnson remarked. “If you met him, you would not have suspected he had a criminal past. He seemed accommodating, well-mannered, and trustworthy.” This perceived trust may have facilitated Robinson’s ascent into roles of authority, including his work for Crockett.
Crockett, in her defense, stated that her team adhered to all established protocols for hiring additional security. “We were approved to use this vendor who also provided security services for additional entities in the local community and worked closely with law enforcement agencies, including Capital Police,” she explained.
The backdrop to this incident includes increased security measures in Congress following attacks on lawmakers in Minnesota and the assassination of political figures. Members of Congress now have access to a security budget for contracting personal security in their districts, although the process for selecting these providers includes recommendations rather than strict requirements.
