AUSTIN, Texas – This weekend, commuters should anticipate longer travel times as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will close the flyovers at the I-35/US 290 East interchange for essential repairs.
Beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday and lasting through the weekend, the closures come in response to growing public concern over noticeable gaps in the flyovers, which have sparked significant online discourse.
TxDOT is set to address two specific flyovers at this key junction, which have drawn the attention of residents and social media users alike. Austin local Alex Marshall expressed his worries, stating, “I just saw that crack and you can see the road and the cars going over it every day. And it’s getting pretty bad.” He added that the sight of heavy trucks crossing the structure raised further concerns about its integrity.
Nearby business owner Natasha Bajic emphasized the importance of safe access for her customers: “I need my customers to be able to get here safely and leave safely.” Marshall has been actively documenting the situation on social media, noting the confusion among motorists about how the flyovers were still operational despite visible issues.
These concerns have gained traction across various platforms, including Threads and Instagram, indicating a community deeply invested in local infrastructure. Bajic remarked, “I’m glad my tax dollars are going to fixing it versus just like ignoring it.”
In response to the public’s observations, TxDOT clarified that the visible gap is part of a bridge joint designed for expansion and contraction. However, the joint has expanded beyond its intended limits, necessitating the repairs. The agency has been monitoring the condition of the bearings and joints for years to ensure the structure’s integrity remains intact.
The repair project, valued at $768,000, was awarded last year, and TxDOT reassured that the situation does not pose a safety risk. When asked if the timing of the repairs was influenced by recent social media videos, TxDOT stated that it was merely a coincidence.
To navigate the closure, drivers on I-35 heading toward US 290 east will need to take the RM 2222 west exit and follow the detour signs that will be posted in the area.
Both flyovers are anticipated to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, provided weather conditions remain favorable for the completion of repairs over the weekend.
