Texas Man Gets 14 Year Federal Sentence for Attempted Gun Grab During Courtroom Brawl

A Liberty County man with a history of felony convictions has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison after an incident in a courtroom where he attempted to take a law enforcement officer’s firearm. Federal prosecutors confirmed the sentencing of 48-year-old Allen Joe Fregia, Sr., who pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

The incident occurred on April 29, 2025, immediately following Fregia’s sentencing in state court. Following the verdict, Fregia became agitated while being escorted out of the courtroom, leading to a physical confrontation involving several officers. In the midst of the struggle, he was able to grab a gun from an officer’s holster. Fortunately, the officer managed to regain control of the weapon while other personnel subdued Fregia. One officer sustained injuries during the confrontation that necessitated medical attention.

As a convicted felon, Fregia was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs emphasized that this case is part of Operation Take Back America, a comprehensive initiative by the Department of Justice focused on reducing violent crime, dismantling transnational criminal organizations, and tackling problems related to illegal immigration.

The investigation involved several agencies, including the Texas Rangers, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Tommy Coleman.
