A 14-year-old boy from Pleasant Grove is currently receiving treatment at a children’s hospital following a shooting incident involving a shotgun. The event occurred inside a vacant home in the area on Tuesday evening.
The alleged shooter, 66-year-old Victor Burnett, reportedly opened fire on two teenagers around 7 PM. After being struck by a round, the injured teen managed to flee the scene and returned to his home on Godfrey Avenue, where his family urgently called 911 for assistance.
Burnett now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. This incident adds to his extensive criminal history in Dallas County.
Witnesses played a crucial role in the investigation, with one individual capturing a photo of Burnett’s truck and its license plate after observing him with a shotgun. This information led the police to apprehend him on Jim Miller Road shortly thereafter.
According to Burnett’s statements in his arrest warrant affidavit, he claimed that the teenagers were trespassing in the vacant home. The 15-year-old who accompanied the injured boy confirmed to authorities that they had been inside the house when they heard a gunshot, prompting them to escape through a bedroom window.
Further investigation revealed that the vacant property had sustained damage, including broken windows, with one window marked by police as a bullet impact site. The home, still under construction, displayed signs indicating a no-trespassing policy.
Although Burnett was not directly employed by the construction company, he had been contracted for lawn care and security duties. Police found a shotgun and a stolen pistol in his vehicle, highlighting his illegal possession of firearms due to a prior sexual assault conviction.
