Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico has formally extended an invitation to Republican incumbent Ken Paxton to engage in three televised debates, hosted by prominent Texas media outlets. Talarico asserts that Paxton has evaded public debates for over ten years and insists on his opponent addressing critical issues related to his policies, financial dealings, and previous legal controversies.
Talarico, who serves as a state representative, announced his challenge in a press release, stating he is prepared to debate on platforms including Nextstar Media Group, KXAN News, NBC News, and WFAA/TEGNA. He urges Paxton to join him in accepting these invitations.
“Ken Paxton has not faced a political opponent in more than a decade,” Talarico remarked. “I am challenging Ken Paxton to three televised debates. I will be present on that stage because I am accountable to the people of Texas.”
In a recent interview, Talarico elaborated that Paxton should clarify inquiries regarding his financial status, his tenure as attorney general, the impeachment proceedings he faced in 2023, and a controversial plea agreement related to Adam Hoffman, whom Talarico branded as a confirmed child predator. He accused Paxton of providing Hoffman with an “Epstein-style sweetheart deal” and questioned potential agreements with two billionaire political contributors during the impeachment process.
As of now, Paxton has not publicly acknowledged Talarico’s debate challenge or the allegations outlined in Talarico’s statement. Efforts to obtain a comment from Paxton’s team are ongoing.
The three media organizations have extended invitations for statewide televised debates to both candidates, as confirmed by Talarico’s campaign.
