Austin, Texas – A tragic officer-involved shooting in northeast Austin has left one individual dead, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Austin Police Department.
The incident took place just after 5:30 a.m. on Baden Lane near Dessau Road. During a press conference, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis detailed the events that unfolded following a 911 call from a male caller who reported seeing a young person in the vicinity with a handgun tucked into his waistband. The caller indicated that the individual was intermittently brandishing the weapon.
Upon arrival, officers approached the park area where the suspect was located and identified a person fitting the caller’s description. Chief Davis stated that when officers attempted to engage the individual, he initially indicated that he was fine. However, as officers instructed him to keep his hands visible, the situation escalated. The individual reportedly lifted his sweatshirt with one hand while reaching into his waistband with the other.
In response to this perceived threat, officers discharged their weapons, resulting in the individual’s death at the scene. Chief Davis confirmed that the deceased was the same person who had made the emergency call, suggesting the possibility of a suicide by police scenario. It was also noted that the individual resided in the neighborhood where the incident occurred.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Chief Davis indicated that additional information will be shared in an upcoming press conference scheduled for later today, between 12:00 and 12:30 p.m.
