Rice University, located in Houston, has announced a significant enhancement to its financial aid program, set to begin in the fall of 2027. The university will now provide free tuition to students from families earning up to $200,000 annually.
Under the revised Rice Investment initiative, students from households earning less than $100,000 will receive comprehensive support that covers tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board. For those from families with incomes between $100,000 and $200,000 per year, the program will offer free tuition.
Since its inception in 2019, the Rice Investment has been instrumental in promoting access to higher education. Initially, it benefitted families earning $75,000 or less, providing full coverage for tuition and related costs for that income bracket and offering free tuition for those earning between $75,000 and $140,000.
Access to education and affordability have been integral to Rice University’s mission since its founding, as the institution remained tuition-free for over the first 50 years of its existence. The recent expansion of the Rice Investment has been made possible by strategic investments from the university and continued philanthropic support.
President Reginald DesRoches emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This is a defining moment for Rice University and for the future of higher education.
