Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver is grappling with the devastating loss of his 2-year-old son, who tragically drowned in Harris County on June 28. Following this heart-wrenching event, the Buffalo Bills organization has publicly expressed their support for Oliver, who was absent from Saturday’s preseason game.
In a statement released by the team, they conveyed their condolences, emphasizing the profound sorrow of such a loss. “It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent,” remarked Bills general manager Brandon Beane. “We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss.”
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s death. Reports indicate that the child, also named Ed, was discovered unresponsive in a residential swimming pool on June 28. Deputies were dispatched to the scene on Lago Trace Drive in northeast Harris County after receiving a distress call. Unfortunately, the child was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Ed Oliver, a Houston native and graduate of Westfield High School, played college football at the University of Houston from 2016 to 2018. He was drafted by the Bills as the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and is now entering his eighth season with the team.
Due to the recent tragedy, Oliver did not travel with the Bills for their preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns and has missed practices this week due to an undisclosed injury.
