The Conroe Police Department is introducing an innovative drone program aimed at enhancing response times and ensuring public safety. Dubbed the “Drone as First Responder” (DFR), this initiative will enable officers to quickly assess situations from the air.
According to Chief Jon Buckholtz, the department has strategically placed drones atop buildings throughout the town. When a high-priority or serious call comes in, these drones will be deployed to the scene in a matter of seconds. “We will launch them and fly to the scene,” he explained, highlighting the program’s focus on rapid situational awareness.
The primary objective of this drone initiative is to bolster safety for both the public and law enforcement personnel. Chief Buckholtz elaborated, stating, “It’s going to allow us to get to calls much quicker and to be able to have a recorded video of each scene.” This technology aims to provide valuable visual information during critical incidents.
When questioned about the circumstances under which drones would be utilized, Chief Buckholtz indicated that they are mainly intended for emergencies, particularly life-threatening situations. However, he also noted that drones could be employed for less urgent calls if necessary.
Initial simulations have shown promising results, suggesting that the drones could considerably shorten response times. Chief Buckholtz mentioned, “We’ve done some simulations and measurements for the call for service most likely locations, and we’re going to be arriving on scene, from the time that it launched, within 60 seconds or 80 seconds.”
This drone program is set to operate on a one-year trial basis, with the possibility of extending it to three years. The estimated cost for implementing this initiative ranges from $200,000 to $250,000, and importantly, it will not be funded by taxpayer dollars. Instead, the financing will come from funds associated with criminal activities.
The Conroe Police Department has already completed the installation of the necessary equipment and is in the process of training drone operators while finalizing operational policies. The Chief anticipates that the program will be fully operational within the next two to four weeks.
