In a tragic incident early Saturday morning, three off-duty Dallas police officers endured a small plane crash in Forney, leaving Sgt. Joshua Boykin in critical condition with severe spinal injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight when the single-engine aircraft attempted an emergency landing that went awry, ultimately ending up upside down in a field near Sage Hill Parkway and Helms Trail. Remarkably, all individuals aboard survived the harrowing ordeal.
While one officer sustained only minor injuries and another was treated and subsequently released from the hospital, Sgt. Joshua Boykin, a dedicated officer in his forties and a single father of two, remains in critical condition. His injuries are serious and could lead to a long and challenging recovery process.
Friends and family describe Boykin as an adventurous spirit who relished road trips, motorcycles, and creating lasting memories with loved ones. Just days prior to the accident, he celebrated his birthday and shared reflections on social media about seizing opportunities in life.
Sean Pease, a fellow officer, expressed the emotional toll the incident has taken on the police community. “It’s just a huge, you know, life shake-up. That’s what’s going on,” he remarked, emphasizing the focus on supporting Boykin during this difficult time. Pease noted that Boykin was undergoing his third or fourth surgery during a recent visit and that the road to recovery would be arduous.
In the wake of the crash, fellow officers have come together to support all three survivors, with a particular emphasis on Boykin’s ongoing battle for recovery. “We’re incredibly thankful that everybody was able to, if not walk away, you know, they’re still alive after something that significant,” Pease added.
Looking ahead, the Dallas Police Association is already organizing fundraisers to assist the officers affected by the crash. Plans for a community cookout are in the works, with details to be announced shortly. The FAA is expected to release a preliminary report regarding the crash soon, shedding light on the factors that contributed to this tragic event.
