Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is implementing a leadership transition following the early termination of its CEO’s contract. Gene Gamez has been appointed as the Acting President & CEO, taking over from Nadine Lee, who had previously announced her decision not to renew her contract, which is set to expire in September 2026.
The leadership change comes at a critical time, as several North Texas municipalities are preparing to vote in May on whether to withdraw from DART’s service area.
New Leadership Announced
DART’s announcement on Friday confirmed Gene Gamez’s appointment as the Acting President & CEO. Nadine Lee’s contract was terminated after discussions regarding a separation agreement failed to reach a consensus.
Lee’s tenure has faced considerable scrutiny, prompting a search for new leadership to steer the agency’s transit operations effectively.
Challenges Faced
In an interview, Lee highlighted the “political hurdles” that have impacted DART’s operations during her leadership. She noted that these challenges have often diverted attention from the agency’s core mission and slowed progress on enhancing service quality.
When asked if these hurdles influenced her decision to step down, Lee stated, “Not necessarily directly.” However, she acknowledged the upcoming elections regarding DART withdrawals in cities such as Addison, Highland Park, and University Park as significant challenges.
While some cities, including Plano, have opted to cancel their withdrawal elections, citing DART’s commitment to reform its board and return funds to the municipalities, others remain firm in their positions.
“In every locality, there are disparate interests and opinions on taxpayer spending, and we’ve had to confront that sharply in this region over the past five years, especially in the last two years,” Lee commented on the various local sentiments.
