Tonight at The Post in Fort Worth, the retro pop band The Plum Boys will debut their vibrant new EP, titled Alive. The group, consisting of frontperson Fabian Aguilar, bassist Bobby Elder, multi-instrumentalist Caleb Jackson, drummer D’Andre Miskel, and multi-instrumentalist Connor Powell, infuses their music with a nostalgic ’80s vibe, paired with introspective lyrics that evoke the atmosphere of a club inspired by Blade Runner.
The band, which formed in 2020 at the Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts, is eager to celebrate the release of their record before heading to Austin for a showcase at SXSW. Having graced stages at various North Texas venues, including Tulips FTW and Tannahill’s Music Hall, where they opened for the iconic Flock of Seagulls, The Plum Boys are excited to return to The Post.
Alive features four tracks recorded earlier this year at a home studio in Hurst, with the help of producer Brandon Saiz, who has collaborated with notable artists such as Leon Bridges’ backup singer Brandon Marcel and Sam Harvey. Since their debut single, “Lexi,” in 2021, the band has released nearly twenty singles, along with their first album, She, in 2022 and the EP Velvet in 2024. Their music has garnered over a thousand streams for most tracks.
The first single from Alive, titled “Snorkel,” continues the band’s signature sound, characterized by lush instrumentation and ethereal synths. Aguilar’s poignant lyrics reflect a deep sense of introspection: “Too much of my life / I’ve been lost inside my mind / Worrying about the life / That I’ve let pass me by.”
What sets Alive apart from their previous works is its exploration of romantic themes intertwined with a broader, more profound emotional landscape. Aguilar explains, “We wanted to expand our writing by delving into the anxieties and uncertainties we face as musicians and individuals navigating the complexities of life.” He describes this EP as their most cohesive effort to date, expressing excitement about their growth as artists.
Jackson adds that Alive stands out as The Plum Boys’ most personal endeavor, blending whimsical elements with genuine reflections on growing up and the duality of joy and fear inherent in their journey as musicians. He emphasizes the band’s desire to inspire listeners to let loose and enjoy life, stating, “We want people to groove and jam like nobody is watching. We are trying to bring it back.”
