Fans of classic literature may want to look away as a new adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” takes a bold approach that diverges from Emily Brontë’s original intent. Directed by Emerald Fennell, this version embraces a more sensational narrative, focusing on a passionate romance between its two striking leads, played by Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie.
The film opens with the troubled Mr. Earnshaw, portrayed by Martin Clunes, rescuing a young boy—later named Heathcliff—who is being battered by his father. This act of kindness leads to a tumultuous relationship between Heathcliff and Earnshaw’s daughter, Catherine, played by Charlotte Mellington. As Heathcliff suffers abuse at the hands of Earnshaw, he pledges to endure pain for Catherine’s sake, laying the groundwork for their complicated bond.
Fennell, known for her sharp visual style in previous works such as “Promising Young Woman,” elevates this adaptation with striking cinematography and production design. The film’s aesthetic choices, including a dollhouse replica of Edgar Linton’s mansion and bold color palettes, prevent it from feeling like a mere historical artifact. The film also includes moments of S&M imagery, weaving themes of power dynamics throughout the story as Cathy chooses to marry the wealthy Edgar, played by Shazad Latif, over Heathcliff.
Clunes plays a villainous Earnshaw who continues to torment Heathcliff, even after the latter acquires Earnshaw’s dilapidated estate. Meanwhile, Alison Oliver injects humor into her role as Isabella, a quirky character obsessed with Cathy. The unsettling subplot of Heathcliff marrying Isabella to provoke Cathy adds another layer of complexity to the narrative.
While Elordi delivers a respectable performance as Heathcliff, it is Robbie who truly captivates, portraying Cathy as a self-aware beauty who feels slighted when men don’t fall at her feet. Her range as an actress is undeniable, showcasing her talents in previous films such as “I, Tonya” and “Barbie.”
Fennell’s vision and Robbie’s performance serve as the film’s redeeming qualities. Though it might be tempting to dismiss this adaptation as a mere romantic spectacle, it reflects a unique interpretation of Brontë’s narrative, enriched with the director’s personal aesthetic.
