A teacher from Gainesville Independent School District (ISD) is no longer part of the district following a physical altercation involving a student with special needs. The incident garnered attention after video footage surfaced, prompting an immediate review by district officials.
On April 2, Gainesville ISD announced that the special education teacher, who was employed at Gainesville Intermediate School, had been dismissed. The district confirmed that the guardian of the student was contacted right after the incident, and necessary reports were filed with Child Protective Services, the Texas Education Agency, and the Gainesville Police Department.
Footage of the confrontation shows the teacher trailing the student in a classroom setting. At one point, the student falls to the floor as contact is made. Additional video reveals the teacher attempting to remove an object that was caught on the student’s leg while also kicking at it. The student retaliates by kicking back, leading to the teacher responding with a kick towards the student.
Gainesville ISD Superintendent DesMontes Stewart addressed the situation in an email, stating that the teacher did not adhere to the proper protocols set by the Crisis Prevention Institute. However, he emphasized that the findings did not support claims of the student being kicked. “While the actions observed were not aligned with district expectations and training, they were not determined to be abusive in nature,” Stewart stated.
Mary Donaldson, a consultant in special education, provided her insights regarding the incident. “What I observed was, to be honest, mild behavior. I have seen children exhibit far worse actions,” she remarked. Nonetheless, she stressed that there are boundaries that should not be crossed, especially in light of the fact that the teacher was aware of being filmed during the incident. “The first thing that I see is the whole system is wrong. There is no way that teacher should have been left alone in that room by herself,” Donaldson added, advocating for better support systems in such situations.
