Georgetown ISD Therapy Dog Selected as Finalist in National Competition

Georgetown Independent School District’s therapy dog is gaining national recognition for her remarkable contributions throughout the school community. The story of Luna Raptor, a certified therapy dog, has captured the attention of many, highlighting her role in supporting students across the district.

National Competition Finalist

Luna has been named a finalist in the “Hero Pet” contest, organized by the Pet Lovers’ Choice Awards, with proceeds benefiting the Best Friends Animal Society. This recognition has generated excitement among the staff at Georgetown ISD, who are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the competition. Regardless of the results, they are grateful for the community’s support and hope Luna’s story raises awareness about the positive impact therapy dogs have on both students and adults.

This golden retriever may not be after your snacks, but she certainly has a knack for winning hearts. In addition to her work with students at Georgetown ISD, Luna also provides comfort at the Williamson County Juvenile Detention Center. Her handler, Tara Stewart, emphasizes that Luna has become an invaluable member of the team.

Making a Difference

“We’ve seen students who are disappointed for various reasons, such as family issues or anxiety about court appearances. Luna is there to help ease their worries,” explains Tara Stewart, Principal at STEP and Director of Education for the Williamson County Juvenile Services. “Her presence can be a source of comfort during difficult times.”

Luna is specifically trained to offer affection and attention, which is crucial in the alternative education program known as S.T.E.P. This program caters to youth involved in the juvenile justice system and encompasses three schools within one facility. Stewart notes the challenges of working in a detention center, where uncertainty is a constant for the youth. Many of them miss their pets and the simple comfort of companionship.

Students in the program have shared their experiences with Luna, describing her ability to sense when someone is feeling low. “The energy in the room changes when she arrives. Whenever I felt down, she would come up to me, and I would feel better instantly,” remarked one student, highlighting Luna’s supportive role.

Recognition and Advocacy

Luna’s role as a therapy dog has not only made her a beloved figure among students but also positioned her as one of just twelve national finalists in the “Hero Pets” competition. Stewart believes this recognition underscores the importance of therapy dogs in educational and workplace settings. “Every campus and workplace could benefit from having a therapy dog. Just knowing you can take a short break to interact with them can make a significant difference in one’s day,” she said.
