This winter storm is expected to deliver a considerable amount of moisture, primarily in the form of ice, which will coat power lines and tree branches. While Texas electric operators may have learned from past experiences to mitigate widespread outages, localized disruptions remain a risk.
Fortunately, forecasts suggest that Fern will be less severe and shorter in duration compared to Winter Storm Uri five years ago. The region is expected to experience a single day of heavy precipitation followed by three days of consistently freezing temperatures. After temperatures dip below freezing on Friday night, they will start Saturday at a chilly 26 degrees, only managing to reach a high of 28 before plummeting to 14 degrees. Sunday morning will begin at 20 degrees, but temperatures will drop to a record low of 6 degrees overnight. Monday is projected to see a high of 27 degrees before falling to 8 at night, with little opportunity for melting before a sunny Tuesday, which will bring a high of 40 degrees.
Weather forecasts indicate a 100% chance of precipitation throughout Saturday, with potential accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch of ice and one inch of sleet early in the day. Later, additional snowfall and sleet are anticipated, alongside another tenth of an inch of ice. A 30% chance of snow lingers into Sunday, though gusty winds of 30 mph will likely create sub-zero wind chill conditions. Monday will bring a brief respite with sunshine and calm winds, but the bitter cold will persist. Residents are advised to stay home if possible until roads are cleared, ensure pets are kept warm, check on neighbors and vulnerable individuals, and remain cautious of carbon monoxide poisoning from heating sources.
