A rise in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities in Austin has raised alarms among community leaders and local politicians. While Democrats express concerns about the implications of these operations, Republicans continue to support the federal agency’s enforcement measures.
In the Rundberg neighborhood, community leaders gathered to voice their worries regarding recent ICE actions that allegedly target individuals regardless of their citizenship status. Congressman Greg Casar noted that ICE arrests have surged to three or four times the usual volume in recent days. His office has formally reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for clarification on these operations.
Many families rely on services such as free food distribution at the Second Day Adventist Church. However, community leaders report that this routine was disrupted when ICE agents were seen detaining individuals outside the church.
Congressman Casar condemned the increase in ICE activity, stating, “My message today is simple. We have seen a significant increase in ICE activity here in Austin. Trump’s ICE is here in Austin.” He highlighted the irony of ICE operating near a church and an elementary school, suggesting that their presence does not enhance safety but instead tears families apart.
Casar further criticized the agency’s focus, asserting, “They’re not going after criminals. If they’re trying to patrol working-class neighborhoods and retirement communities, they are clearly not targeting criminal activity.” He confirmed that his office has submitted a formal inquiry to the Department of Homeland Security regarding the recent ICE enforcement actions.
A local teacher, John David Saucedo, shared his experiences working with families affected by these detentions. “These are not criminals. These are our brothers and sisters. They take care of children and their parents,” he explained, emphasizing the community’s support for those impacted.
In broader discussions about immigration enforcement, President Donald Trump recently commended ICE agents on social media, asserting they are performing essential work. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed this sentiment, noting that law enforcement officials are focused on apprehending individuals with criminal records.
Concerns regarding ICE’s operations have increased following two deadly shootings involving federal agents. These incidents led to a temporary halt in agency traffic stops, which was soon reversed by President Trump. Tim Miller, a former ICE special agent, defended the agency’s role, stating, “They’re law enforcement officers. They’re not political actors.”
