Harris County officials are actively engaging with local homeowners to help them reduce their property tax burdens by applying for necessary exemptions. This door-to-door outreach initiative aims to ensure that residents are fully aware of their eligibility for tax benefits before an important deadline.
During a recent visit to the South Creek and Sunnyside neighborhoods, Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Annette Ramirez, Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and Central Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Adam Bogard offered personalized assistance to residents. They are focusing on encouraging homeowners to take advantage of tax exemptions, which can significantly lower the taxable value of their homes.
Chief Appraiser Adam Bogard emphasized that these exemptions can reduce a home’s taxable value for school tax purposes by up to $140,000. Additionally, seniors and individuals with disabilities may qualify for an extra reduction of $60,000, along with a freeze on school taxes at the amount paid during their first year of eligibility.
Ramirez expressed the importance of this initiative, stating, “I believe that government should actively work to reduce barriers and bring services directly to the community, because at the end of the day, this work is about the people.” Officials are concerned that many residents may be overpaying their property taxes simply because they haven’t completed the necessary paperwork.
The deadline to file for these property tax exemptions is swiftly approaching on April 30, making timely action crucial. Commissioner Ellis remarked, “Too many eligible homeowners aren’t claiming exemptions. These savings can help people stay in their homes and assist families in building wealth for future generations.”
For those who may have missed the officials during their neighborhood visits, applications for exemptions can still be submitted online via the Harris County Central Appraisal District (HCAD) website. The process is free, and residents are encouraged to apply directly to avoid any additional fees from third parties.
