A couple from North Texas is expressing gratitude towards the good Samaritans who came to their rescue following a dramatic hit-and-run that left their truck overturned on Highway 121 in Grapevine. Fortunately, both the couple and their two dogs emerged from the incident with only minor injuries.
The terrifying event unfolded around 9:30 PM as Makenzie Koch and Kyle Bettencourt were returning home to Weatherford. Their golden retrievers, River and Riggins, were in the backseat when their white Ford truck was struck by a red SUV, which fled the scene after the collision.
In the chaotic moments that followed, Koch and Bettencourt managed to unbuckle their seatbelts and exit the vehicle, only to find their dogs had dashed in different directions—River into the grass and Riggins towards oncoming traffic. Fortunately, several bystanders, including an off-duty paramedic, stopped to assist.
Bettencourt recalled the incident, stating, “We were in the middle lane, just driving along, and the next thing you know, I could feel kind of the back driver’s side tire of my car just get smacked…” Koch described the rescuers as “angels” during that critical time.
The off-duty paramedic quickly came to the aid of Riggins, ensuring the dog was safe before checking on the couple for any potential injuries. Both individuals were subsequently taken to the hospital, where they were treated for minor bumps and bruises. Following the incident, Koch felt compelled to express her gratitude but realized she hadn’t had the chance to thank her rescuer personally.
Determined to reach out, she took to social media to locate the paramedic, who preferred to remain anonymous but shared his relief that everyone was safe.
As the Grapevine police continue their investigation into the hit-and-run involving the red SUV, Bettencourt recounted that the driver had hit their vehicle and subsequently lost control, colliding with another car. While the couple hopes for justice, they are focusing on the positives, including a cherished item from Koch’s grandmother that survived the crash.
Reflecting on the experience, Koch mentioned several “God moments” that occurred just prior to the crash, such as rearranging items in the vehicle and rolling up windows, which she believes contributed to their safety. “Trying to find the positive, no matter what you’re walking through,” she remarked.
