Numerous educational institutions in the Houston area have reported disruptions to their Canvas platforms following a significant cyberattack that affected numerous schools and universities across the country. This incident has raised concerns for thousands of students reliant on the platform for their educational needs.
Canvas, a widely adopted online learning management system, has been compromised, leading to outages that are impacting schools and universities nationwide. The hacker group known as ShinyHunters has claimed responsibility for the breach and has threatened potential data leaks.
Local institutions, including major universities such as Baylor University, Texas Tech, and the University of Houston, have been identified as affected by the outage. While some campuses have confirmed their status, others have clarified that they are not impacted despite being named by the hackers.

- Waller ISD
While Crosby ISD and Klein ISD were also mentioned by the hacker group, both districts have confirmed they are not affected. Crosby ISD clarified that it does not utilize Canvas, and Klein ISD stated that they had only trialed the software without uploading any student data. Harmony Public Schools has also indicated that they do not use Canvas.
The hacker group’s list is only a portion of the extensive number of campuses experiencing issues across the United States, with the potential for additional districts to be affected that have not yet been identified.
In response to the situation, Instructure, the company responsible for Canvas, has indicated on its website that the platform is currently undergoing maintenance and is expected to be operational again soon.
Several institutions have issued statements addressing the outage:
Rice University: “Rice has been impacted and we are working to mitigate the situation.”
Texas Woman’s University: “The Canvas platform is out of service due to a nationwide cybersecurity incident affecting all three of TWU’s campuses. The university is aware of the impact this will have on assignment submissions and grading and is providing leniency to users during this period.”
University of Houston: “We are aware of a global disruption affecting the Canvas LMS platform due to a cybersecurity incident involving Instructure. This incident was not specifically targeted at the University of Houston or its universities. We will share more information as it becomes available.”
Conroe ISD: “We are actively monitoring updates from Instructure and will continue to communicate with families and staff as more information emerges. Despite the issue stemming from the third-party Canvas platform, we aim to minimize disruptions to teaching and learning.”
Houston ISD: “Instructure has confirmed that there is no evidence of sensitive information, such as passwords or social security numbers, being compromised. We are working closely with Canvas to restore access as quickly as possible and will provide updates as the situation evolves.”
Katy ISD: “We want to inform our community that our Canvas platform is currently unavailable due to a cybersecurity incident. While this was not directed specifically at Katy ISD, it has affected numerous organizations. We are monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as we receive them.”
Pearland ISD: “We are committed to transparency and want to assure our families that our internal systems remain secure. We are working with Instructure to understand the implications of this incident and will keep you informed.”
