Thieves were captured on surveillance footage stealing car wheels from an apartment complex in Houston while many residents were taking shelter during a recent winter storm. The incident occurred at the Lakeside Apartments, prompting an investigation by local law enforcement.
Jefferey Echevarria, one of the victims, reported that the theft took place just moments before he was scheduled to leave for work. He discovered the damage around 5 a.m. on Monday, only to find his car stripped of its wheels.
“I walked out, fully dressed for the cold, and found my car without any wheels,” Echevarria recounted. “There’s significant damage to my door, making it impossible to open.”
According to Echevarria, the thieves appeared to be well-prepared, utilizing tools to remove the wheel locks efficiently. “They seemed to have some kind of wrench to take off the wheel locks,” he explained.
Echevarria suspects that the criminals exploited the winter storm to carry out their theft. “Living in a big city has its challenges,” he lamented. “Criminals take advantage of people when they are at their most vulnerable, especially during a freeze. Despite having my car locked, alarmed, and secured with wheel locks, they still managed to steal my wheels.”
He further speculated that the suspects had been monitoring the apartment complex for some time, noting, “From what I gather, they were staking out the area and timed their actions around shift changes. They were in and out within approximately 20 minutes.”
In response to the incident, Echevarria mentioned that the apartment management has been proactive in addressing security concerns, with plans to repair broken gates. “They’ve been responsive and effective,” he stated. “However, I would recommend increasing security personnel rather than relying on just one guard, as it’s difficult for one person to oversee the entire complex.”
The theft has created significant disruption in Echevarria’s life, forcing him to find alternative transportation to work. “This situation is incredibly frustrating for someone trying to maintain their livelihood,” he expressed. “Now I have to make other arrangements, and I hope that justice is served. If these individuals are apprehended, I intend to pursue charges, as it’s essential for a lesson to be learned.”
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the thefts to contact the Houston Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
To mitigate the risk of wheel theft, police recommend that vehicle owners install high-quality wheel locks, utilize car alarms, and park with the steering wheel turned to one side. These measures can make it more challenging for thieves to access lug nuts and remove wheels.
