Mary Lima, who leads the philanthropic efforts at Status Labs, envisioned a program that would allow every employee to engage in meaningful work and take pride in their contributions. “The whole point is to make sure we all, as a company, participate, and that we all feel proud of this,” Lima stated, emphasizing the collective effort involved.
Building on this vision, Status Labs partnered with the Lone Star Justice Alliance (LSJA), a Texas nonprofit dedicated to assisting youth and young adults caught in the state’s criminal legal system. Many of these young people are serving sentences that were handed down when they were still minors. Through its Youth Sentencing Project, LSJA advocates for those who were tried as adults and received disproportionately harsh sentences.
Status Labs focuses on leveraging its expertise in online reputation management to shed light on the stories of individuals often overlooked by society. The Incomplete Sentences program aims not only to support these individuals but also to reshape public perception.

Initially, Lima sought to collaborate with a national organization focused on exonerating the wrongfully convicted. However, upon discovering the needs of a Texas justice organization, she pivoted the idea to target individuals still incarcerated, recognizing the importance of telling their stories.
Within a week, Lima refined the concept, which was embraced enthusiastically by both the company’s leadership and the partner organization. This newfound clarity and focus allowed Status Labs to fill a critical gap in support for those still facing challenges within the justice system.
Research indicates that employees are increasingly seeking workplaces that encourage volunteerism and community involvement. A study conducted by America’s Charities found that 71 percent of workers prioritize a company culture that supports giving back. Moreover, a Deloitte survey revealed that 92 percent of HR executives believe that contributing business skills to nonprofit efforts enhances employees’ leadership capabilities.
At Status Labs, the key skill being utilized is narrative construction. The firm’s ability to clarify and enhance public perception is being directed toward individuals whose public records often convey only their most difficult moments. The campaign’s inaugural participant is Lici Carmichael, a writer whose powerful insights have resonated deeply with the team. Before engaging with the stories, volunteers underwent trauma-informed training to ensure they could navigate sensitive conversations appropriately. Lima acknowledges the weight of this responsibility, recognizing the significance of allowing individuals to share their experiences.
