An inmate at the Harris County Jail has died following what officials are describing as an “apparent medical emergency.” The individual, identified as 47-year-old Christopher Mendez, was pronounced dead at Ben Taub Hospital on Wednesday morning.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that Mendez had been incarcerated for nine days on a drug possession charge. The incident that led to his hospitalization occurred on Tuesday when he experienced a medical emergency and was subsequently transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Mendez was declared dead at 7:28 a.m. on Wednesday. In accordance with state law, the Houston Police Department is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Additionally, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will perform an autopsy to establish the cause of death.
The sheriff’s office has notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards regarding Mendez’s passing. Furthermore, the Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division is looking into the matter as part of standard protocol to ensure that all relevant policies and procedures were adhered to during his detention.
