Intense Showdown in Texas' 33rd Congressional District: Colin Allred vs. Julie Johnson

The Democratic primary for Texas’ newly established 33rd congressional district is intensifying, featuring a contest between a current and a former member of Congress. Julie Johnson, who currently serves the 32nd district, is vying for the new seat against Colin Allred, who previously held that position before his bid for the U.S. Senate in 2024. Both candidates recently engaged in a Zoom discussion to provide insight into their campaign strategies and the dynamics of the race.

DALLAS – In a rare political matchup, a former congressperson is challenging their successor due to recent redistricting efforts. The ongoing Democratic primary highlights a face-off between Johnson and Allred as they aim to secure the newly drawn congressional seat.

Recent developments include Governor Greg Abbott’s endorsement of a redistricting bill that has reshaped Texas’ congressional map, favoring Republican representation. Johnson stepped into the role of representative for the 32nd district following Allred’s departure to pursue a Senate seat. Now, the two are competing directly for the 33rd district.

During their conversation, Johnson emphasized the importance of their respective records, suggesting that voters will have a clear basis for comparison. “The thing that’s interesting about both of us is we both have records to be measured by, and I think that record is certainly up for discussion,” she stated.

Allred entered the race as the filing deadline approached, having exited the Senate contest when Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett announced her candidacy. He expressed his commitment to serving constituents with integrity, stating, “What I’ve always tried to do is serve in a way that has integrity and shows that I’m going to put the folks that I am serving first.” He highlighted his decision to reject corporate PAC funding and abstain from stock trading during his congressional tenure, contrasting his approach with Johnson’s financial decisions.

In response to a question regarding the differences in their voting records, Johnson articulated her stance on critical issues. “We have some very different records on issues that are significantly important. He voted for two immigration bills that would have denied due process to detainees, and I voted against those bills,” she asserted. Johnson also expressed her vision for healthcare, advocating for broader access compared to Allred’s more restrictive voting pattern.

Both candidates addressed the heated topic of immigration enforcement during the discussion. Johnson criticized the current state of ICE, suggesting that the agency has overstepped its authority. “ICE is exceeding their authority in so many situations, and it’s unfortunate that the Department of Homeland Security has not reined that in,” she remarked. Allred echoed her sentiments, stating, “Under this President, ICE is out of control, and this is an agency that, to me, has been given no oversight, no accountability.”

Despite the new district lines, analysts predict that the seat will likely remain in Democratic hands. The competition between Allred and Johnson promises to be a defining feature of the upcoming election season.
