In San Marcos, Texas, an investigation is underway following reports of illness among students at a local middle school, linked to cookies sold by a staff member. Several students at Goodnight Middle School have complained of feeling unwell after consuming these treats.
The situation has raised concerns, although it remains unclear whether any harmful ingredients were present in the cookies. In response to the incident, the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) has placed the staff member on administrative leave.
Lisa McClellan, the grandmother of one affected student, shared her conversation with her grandson, who mentioned that after eating a cookie, he did not feel right. “He goes, I don’t know, I just didn’t feel good,” McClellan recounted.
According to the principal’s communication to parents, multiple students reported feeling unwell throughout the day, with four requiring a visit to the nurse’s office. However, McClellan noted that her grandson could not articulate specific symptoms, stating he was not experiencing nausea, headaches, or vomiting.
Another parent chimed in, recalling that her son had previously enjoyed the same cookies without any issues. “They’re just homemade cookies with icing and a filling,” she remarked, expressing surprise over the sudden complaints. “I was raving about how great they were to my girlfriends,” she added.
McClellan suggested that the negative reactions might be influenced more by conversation than by the cookies’ actual contents. Her grandson mentioned feeling fine aside from the cookie incident, leading her to contemplate whether the reports of illness were a result of peer influence rather than a physical reaction.
The principal’s letter informed parents that selling cookies violated district policy, and the staff member involved has been removed from their position. Law enforcement is currently testing the cookies to determine if they contained any harmful substances.
The district has advised parents to seek medical attention for any unusual symptoms their children may experience and to report such cases to the school.
