A group of eight Japanese soccer enthusiasts has established a temporary home in Irving, Texas, while they follow their beloved Samurai Blue during the FIFA World Cup. Over the past month, these fans have traveled across North America, attending matches and immersing themselves in the camaraderie of fellow supporters.
On Wednesday evening, a vibrant rally took place at Harwood Park in Downtown Dallas, where thousands of Japanese fans gathered in anticipation of their team’s upcoming match against Sweden. The event featured a surprise appearance from the team’s manager, Hajime Moriyasu, who energized the crowd with his presence.
Among the attendees was Michael Peticolas, the owner of Peticolas Brewing, who recently embarked on an unforgettable journey with Japanese fans to witness their team’s triumph over Tunisia in Mexico. His enthusiasm for the game and the fans was palpable as he shared his experiences.
At their Irving rental, the group of fans has not only bonded over their shared passion but also enjoyed the local culture, indulging in Texas BBQ and good company. Ken Yomo, a resident of Singapore, expressed how he connected with his new friends through social media, stating, “Before coming here, it was just mutual friends. Now we are a team.”
Fumio Ohue, hailing from Tokyo, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the joy of daily BBQs and the forming of lasting friendships. “It’s a time of great unity, not just pushing Samurai Blue out but pushing Japan to Texas,” he remarked.
The rally in Downtown Dallas offered a festive atmosphere, complete with live music and an array of Japanese food and beverages, creating a sense of community among fans before the pivotal match. One fan shared his bittersweet experience, admitting he was out of paid time off and money, yet rich in unforgettable memories from the tournament.
