Austin police have confirmed the identity of a pedestrian who tragically lost his life in an auto-pedestrian incident in North Austin on Wednesday afternoon.
The collision occurred on April 1, shortly before 2:30 p.m., at the intersection of North Lamar Boulevard and Rutland Drive. The individual, who has been identified as 40-year-old Mario Alfonso Garcia Gonzalez, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities report that the vehicle involved in the incident fled prior to their arrival.
This incident marks a grim milestone, as Gonzalez’s death is recognized as the 20th fatal crash in Austin this year, contributing to a total of 20 fatalities. In comparison, by the same date in 2025, there were 21 fatal crashes resulting in 25 deaths.
