As spring break officially commenced, over 70 individuals were arrested on Galveston Island and in Texas City on Friday, coinciding with ‘Senior Skip Day’. The operation began early in the morning, led by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office alongside other local law enforcement agencies, who aimed to address the influx of young people visiting the area.
Law enforcement had received intelligence about Buc-ee’s in Texas City being a popular gathering spot for seniors. Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen reported that hundreds, if not thousands, of seniors converged on the location, resulting in 55 arrests. Authorities also confiscated 10 firearms, two of which were identified as stolen. Fullen noted that the recovery of these weapons likely prevented potential violence on the island.
Traffic congestion was a significant challenge during this period, prompting the Galveston Police Department to close certain beaches due to overcrowding. Police Chief Doug Balli expressed satisfaction with how the first day of spring break unfolded, highlighting that the violence experienced in previous years did not recur this time around. Of the 12 arrests made, eight were specifically related to prohibited weapons.
