Three women are recovering in the hospital after being shot outside a convenience store in Houston’s Sunnyside neighborhood late Tuesday night. The incident occurred on Scott Street, near the intersection with Reed Street, prompting an investigation by local authorities.
According to Houston Police Department (HPD) Lieutenant R. Willkens, two of the victims, both in their mid-30s, were shot in the arm while standing in the parking lot of the store. A third woman, who was inside her vehicle at the time, sustained a gunshot wound to her hand. She managed to drive to Vera Lou Street before stopping for help.
All three women were transported to nearby hospitals and are expected to recover, as stated by Lt. Willkens. Preliminary investigations suggest that the shooter discharged rounds from a grassy area across the street, potentially using an automatic weapon or rifle given the rapid succession of gunfire.
Remarkably, at least one bullet struck the convenience store itself, hitting a cooler inside, but fortunately, no customers or employees were harmed during the incident. Despite a thorough search of the area by an HPD helicopter, no suspects have been apprehended.
Currently, the identity and description of the shooter remain unknown, and investigators suspect that the assailant fled the scene on foot before possibly entering a vehicle. The specific type of firearm used in the shooting has not been confirmed, and a motive for the attack is still unclear.
