The U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently visited DFW Airport to unveil significant federal funding aimed at enhancing airport infrastructure and air traffic control systems, which will have a considerable impact on the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This funding comes at a crucial time as the region prepares to accommodate the influx of visitors for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Duffy announced that the Department of Transportation is allocating $24 million to DFW International Airport as part of a broader $835 million investment that will benefit 41 airports across 24 states. With a plane departing DFW every 85 seconds, there is a pressing need for modernization, particularly as many airport facilities have not seen substantial updates in decades.
In an interview, Duffy emphasized the urgency of these upgrades, stating, “Across the network, it hasn’t really been updated in decades. This should have been done years ago. But as I’ve come into this position, I did a deep dive in the first couple of months to see how bad it was. And what I discovered was everything needs to be built brand new.” A key focus of the funding will be on improving air traffic control systems, which have faced challenges in recent months.
Duffy detailed plans to replace outdated copper wiring with fiber optics, along with the installation of new radar systems, radio equipment, and voice switches, all vital for maintaining safety and operational efficiency. He highlighted the importance of these enhancements, stating, “All really important equipment on the safety side and the redundancy side.”
In addition to the $24 million for DFW, another $1 billion is set to enhance facilities for families at 45 airports nationwide. “Here in Dallas, we’re going to expand your bathrooms, making them more accessible for strollers and changing tables,” Duffy noted, indicating a commitment to improving the overall travel experience.
This funding is part of the “Big Beautiful Bill” that Congress passed last July, with Duffy expressing confidence in the swift implementation of these projects. “We’re moving at an incredibly fast speed. The $12.5 billion for the new network, the radios, the radar — all will be done in two and a half years,” he affirmed.
As the region gears up for the World Cup, Duffy announced a $10 million allocation to assist with transportation logistics in Dallas. “You’ll have more capacity than you normally have, so it’s going to help if you need to bring in more buses, more drivers, more overtime, to make sure we can move people through the city,” he explained.
Ultimately, the goal is to ensure safer skies and a seamless travel experience for the anticipated crowds during the World Cup and beyond.
