An Alvin resident, Joe Kusick, is confronting significant challenges after being diagnosed with a rare and incurable form of bone marrow cancer. His diagnosis came unexpectedly while he was being treated for a broken arm and a brain bleed. Now, as he prepares for a stem cell treatment that his insurance does not fully cover, Joe and his family are faced with the necessity of relocating temporarily to Austin.
On Valentine’s Day, while recovering from his injuries, Joe received the life-altering news about his condition. Following the diagnosis, medical professionals initiated chemotherapy and treatment the very next day. Unfortunately, Joe’s health insurance has been inadequate, as it does not cover the stem cell procedure in his hometown, compelling him to seek care in Austin for a duration of four weeks.
The financial burden is considerable. Joe and his wife, Sam, not only need to manage expenses for their home in Alvin but also for temporary housing in Austin during his treatment. Compounding their situation is their responsibility for their adult daughter, who has special needs due to a serious car accident nearly two decades ago.
Sam reflected on their family’s journey, stating, “We’ve been taking care of all three ever since,” referring to their daughter and her children, who were very young at the time of the accident.
In light of the financial strain, Joe is seeking assistance through donations from a platform called Angelink to help facilitate his treatment journey. Despite the overwhelming challenges, Joe remains optimistic and resolute, saying, “The kids, the love I have for them. And I’m not ready to give up.”
