A Texas man has been charged with felony animal cruelty following the rescue of seven dogs found in dire conditions. The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Jake Stephen Davis, who faces a third-degree felony charge, with a bond set at $150,000.
The case began on May 17, when the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and local authorities received a tip from a concerned citizen. Investigators discovered six Cur-type dogs confined in pens along a farm-to-market road, lacking access to food and only having small amounts of contaminated rainwater. A seventh dog was found nearby, chained and tethered next to a wooden doghouse, with a bowl containing tainted water.
Authorities reported that one of the dogs was in particularly poor health, exhibiting extreme lethargy and a rapid decline in condition. Fearing for the animals’ survival, investigators executed an emergency seizure of the six dogs. They were transported to the SPCA’s Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center for urgent veterinary care and forensic evaluation. A warrant was subsequently obtained, allowing for the seizure of the seventh dog, which was removed the following day.
In a civil custody hearing, Judge Kerry Crews of Hunt County Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 awarded permanent custody of the dogs to the SPCA, citing Davis’s alleged cruelty. The judge also ordered Davis to pay $4,056 in restitution for the care of the animals.
Currently, the SPCA reports that the rescued dogs are receiving necessary medical treatment and supportive care, and their conditions are stabilizing. Courtney Burns, chief investigator for the SPCA’s Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit, stated that the medical team is carefully monitoring each dog’s health while behavioral specialists work to assist in their rehabilitation and trust-building through socialization.
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, as authorities continue to gather information regarding the case.
