Recent research indicates that Texas voters are evenly divided on the issue of election integrity versus ballot access. A survey conducted by the Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center at Texas Southern University revealed that opinions among registered voters are split, with nearly 60% believing there is at least some level of voter fraud occurring in U.S. elections.
The survey, which involved 1,706 registered Texas voters, aimed to understand their perspectives on the critical issues of election integrity and ballot access. When asked to choose between the two, exactly half of the respondents prioritized the prevention of voter fraud and the voting of “illegal immigrants,” while the other half emphasized the importance of ensuring that eligible citizens can exercise their right to vote.
Partisan Perspectives
The survey also highlighted significant partisan divisions. Among Texas Republicans, a striking 80% prioritized election integrity, whereas 88% of Texas Democrats focused on the importance of ballot access. Among independent voters, opinions were nearly evenly matched, with 52% favoring ballot access and 48% supporting election integrity.
Perceptions of Voter Fraud
When it comes to perceptions of voter fraud itself, the data shows that 24% of Texas voters believe there is a “great deal” of fraud, while 35% think there is “some.” In contrast, 30% of respondents perceive “very little” fraud, and 11% believe there is “none” at all.
Political affiliation again plays a critical role in these perceptions. A notable 83% of Republicans are convinced there is either a great deal or some voter fraud, while only 70% of Democrats feel that there is very little to no fraud in U.S. elections.
