Austin police have confirmed the identity of a third victim following a tragic mass shooting at a bar in downtown Austin over the weekend. Jorge Pederson, a 30-year-old mixed martial arts fighter from Minnesota, succumbed to his injuries on Monday after being taken off life support.
Pederson was one of three individuals killed in the incident, which also claimed the lives of 19-year-old Ryder Harrington and 21-year-old Savitha Shan. In addition, thirteen others sustained injuries, with two remaining in critical condition as of Monday, according to the Austin Police Department.
Remembering Jorge Pederson
Having relocated to Austin just two weeks prior to the shooting, Pederson was described by his mother, Nancy, as a kind and humorous individual who deeply cared for those around him. He was preparing for his first professional fight scheduled for May and was known for living the MMA lifestyle.
A fundraiser set up by a fellow fighter to assist with Pederson’s funeral expenses highlighted his inspirational impact on the mixed martial arts community. The campaign noted that he had quickly gained a significant following and was seen as a welcoming and motivating presence at the gym, encouraging new fighters to pursue their dreams through hard work and dedication.
The Med City Fighting Championships also paid tribute to Pederson, calling him a “fantastic fighter.” The organization expressed their condolences, recalling how much he was admired by everyone he encountered since the beginning of their association.
Details of the Shooting Incident
The mass shooting occurred early Sunday morning outside Buford’s bar in the bustling Sixth Street entertainment district. The event was initiated by a call to police around 1:40 a.m., reporting a man firing a weapon. Upon arrival, police engaged the gunman, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, who was killed in the exchange.
Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal, reportedly displayed concerning symbols on his clothing, including a sweatshirt stating “Property of Allah” and a T-shirt featuring an Iranian flag. Although he fired upon patrons from outside the bar, he never entered the establishment.
Authorities revealed that Diagne possessed two firearms during the shooting, both of which were legally purchased in 2017. The investigation has not linked him to any prior law enforcement concerns. An explosives team was called to examine his vehicle after discovering suspicious items inside, but no bombs were found.
The ongoing investigation involves scrutinizing a vast amount of physical and digital evidence, with authorities working tirelessly around the clock. FBI officials have indicated that it is still too early to determine the motive behind the attack.
