A tragic incident unfolded in South Austin as the local fire department continues to investigate a devastating apartment fire that claimed the lives of three children.
The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning, specifically around 12:51 a.m., in the 2500 block of Burleson Road at the Burl North apartment complex. Firefighters worked diligently for several hours to extinguish the flames, which were contained to a single two-story unit.
In addition to the heartbreaking loss of the children, two adults and a pediatric patient were transported to the hospital, where they are currently in critical condition. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to adjacent apartments, attributed to a fire stop located in the attic.
As a result of the incident, residents from approximately 30 units have been displaced, prompting immediate evacuation measures.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and while no official details have been released, the Austin Police Department’s Homicide Unit is involved as part of standard protocol when the cause is undetermined. Authorities have indicated that they do not currently consider the fire to be suspicious.
